抹茶色のランドセル：A Matcha Green Randoseru – What A Choice Can Say

みなさんランドセルは何かわかりますか？
小学校で使うバックで、6年間使います。
入学は4月ですが、今の時期、ランドセルの注文受付が始まるそうです。
今日はランドセルの色についてお話します。
私が小学校に行く頃は男の子が黒、女の子が赤といった色分けが普通でした。
私立の学校に行く人は男女関係なく紺色の指定だったり、女の子の赤色のバリエーションが増えて、ピンクだったり明るい赤色になったりしていた時代でした。
私は自分では覚えていないんですが、黒色のランドセルが欲しいと親に言ったそうです。親や祖母が「女の子が黒色を持ったらいじめられるんじゃないか」と心配して、母親と私は抹茶色のランドセルを選びました。
当時、同級生で赤と黒以外のランドセルは4人だけだったと思います。
水色、茶色二人、そして抹茶色の私です。
他に女の子で黒色のランドセルの子が一人いました。
その子は髪型も服装も遊び方も他の男の子と全く一緒でした。
既存の色の選択肢ではない、ほかの人と被らない、
「抹茶色」のランドセルを背負って登校できることがとても嬉しかった気がします。大好きでした。卒業してからもずっと家に保管していました。
東日本大震災の後、母はそのランドセルを被災した子どもに寄付しました。
さて、私が小学校に行ったのはもう20年以上前のことです。
今はどんな状況なのか。
実は昨年、「わたしたちはわかりあえないからこそ展」という日本のジェンダーギャップを考える展示を見に行きました。
そこで偶々「ランドセル選びドキュメンタリー(2023年)」というCMを見ました。
ランドセルのメーカーが持つお店の中に、沢山の色のランドセルが並んでいます。
子どもはそのお店に一人で行き、「親が選んでほしいと思うランドセル」「自分が本当に欲しいと思うランドセル」を選びます。
その様子を親が別室で見ています。
そこに参加した子供は五人程だったと思います。みんな「白」「水色」など自由に選んでいきます。
そこで、ある男の子が親のために「黒」を、自分のために「ピンク」を選ぶんです。
それを見ながら、わたしはその場で立ち尽くしてしまいました。
心の中で、嬉しい気持ちと、この子の未来を思う気持ち。
一度の選択、その影響力。いろんな気持ちが一杯でした。
今年このブランド「天使のはね」のランドセルのラインアップは258種類だそうです。

Everyone, do you know what a “randoseru” is?
It is a type of backpack that Japanese elementary school students use for 6 years. School starts in April, but apparently orders for randoseru usually open around this time of the year.
Today I want to talk about randoseru colors.
When I was in elementary school, the color split was pretty standard: black for boys, red for girls. If you went to a private school, sometimes navy was specified for everyone regardless of gender. Over time, more variations of red for girls became common – pink, bright red, and so on.
I don’t remember it myself, but apparently I told my parents that I wanted a black randoseru. My parents and grandmother were worried that “if a girl carries a black backpack, she might get bullied”, so my mom and I decided to get a matcha-colored randoseru.
At the time, I think only about four students in my grade had randoseru that weren’t red or black: one light blue, two brown, and me with matcha green.
There was also one girl with a black randoseru. Her hairstyle, clothes, and even the way she played were just like the boys’.
Because my color wasn’t one of the common choices, and because it didn’t match anyone else’s, I remember feeling genuinely happy to walk to school carrying a matcha-green randoseru.
I loved it. Even after I graduated, I kept it at home for a long time.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake, my mother donated it to a child affected by the disaster.
Anyway, my elementary school days were more than 20 years ago.
So what is it like today?
Actually, last year I visited an exhibition about the gender gap in Japan called “Because We Cannot Truly Understand Each Other”.
While I was there, I happened to watch a commercial titled “Randoseru Choosing Documentary (2023)”.
Inside a randoseru shop run by the manufacturer, there are backpacks in countless colors lined up on display. A child goes into the shop alone and chooses two randoseru: one their parents would want them to choose, and one they truly want for themselves.
The parents watch from a separate room.
I think there were about 5 children taking part in the documentary, and they all chose freely – white, light blue, and other colors.
Then one boy chose black for his parents and pink for himself.
Watching that, I found myself standing there frozen.
Deep inside my heart, I felt happy for him, and at the same time thinking about his future.
One choice, and the weight it can carry. I was overwhelmed with so many emotions.
Apparently, this year, the randoseru brand “Angel’s Wing (Tenshi no Hane)” has 258 different options in its lineup.
