In Aomori Prefecture, where I live, there is a famous festival called Nebuta Matsuri. It takes place over six days in early August. It is a very popular festival, attracting many tourists from across Japan and even overseas each year.

The origin of the Nebuta Matsuri is unclear. It is believed to have originated from the “Tanabata Matsuri” brought from China during the Nara period (710-794) and an event that had existed in Aomori for a long time. Over time, these traditions merged and evolved into the modern festival we see today.

Large floats featuring scary faces of people and animals are paraded through the town. These floats are handmade by artisans known as Nebuta-shi. Occasionally, the floats are run with high energy or spun in circles, entertaining the crowd. Also, people called “Haneto” chant “Rassera! Rassera!” while dancing and jumping along with the floats. They jump for about two hours. If it were me, I’d want to take a break halfway through.

Anyone can participate as a Haneto. However, there is a designated costume that must be worn. You can either purchase or rent it, so be sure to check it out!

After the festival, your legs will feel like they’re made of wood. Japan’s summers are hot and humid, so you’ll need to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks. Be prepared!
