Trying to Understand Contemporary Art

 (English Below)

ENGLISH VERSION

There is a contemporary art museum in the town right next to mine. It features works by top-class artists and painters, alongside pieces by creators I’ve never heard of before. Every single piece is unique and interesting, though some are so complex that it is hard to understand.

When I look at artworks expressing anger or sadness toward social issues, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Wait, isn’t that a bit contradictory?” There was also a sound art piece that recorded various human voices and played them back in pitch-black darkness. Every time I heard a voice, I got startled, and the surrounding darkness made the whole experience quite terrifying.
Then, there were paintings as well. I remember seeing a pitch-black mountain painted on a white canvas. Even after reading the description and staring at it for a long time, I couldn’t grasp the meaning at all. The more I re-read the explanation, the more confused I became, and the longer I stared at the canvas, the less it made sense. Eventually, I just gave up. Compared to this, I find colorful paintings filled with joy and vibrant energy are much simpler and easier to understand. When I look at them, happy feelings naturally well up inside me.

During a Japanese lesson, I shared my thoughts on contemporary art with one of my students, and she offered a fascinating perspective. She said, “Contemporary art is a lot like life.” If you see a piece you don’t understand, you can simply accept it by thinking, “Ah, so there’s this way of thinking too.” And if you happen to stumble upon a piece you love, you can just consider yourself lucky. Personally, I used to think contemporary art was interesting but a bit too free, so it became impossible to understand. However, that single remark from my student completely shifted my viewpoint.
A friend of mine also once told me, “With contemporary art, the act of thinking itself is the art.” I see. I guess that’s another wonderful way to look at it. How about you? Do you like contemporary art? How do you feel when you run into a piece that is difficult to understand? I would love to hear your thoughts!
