Japanese Variety Show Recommendations

 (English Below)

ENGLISH VERSION

For a long time now, I haven’t really enjoyed watching Japanese variety shows, so I rarely watch them.

Watching variety shows is one of the typical ways Japanese people spend their time at home. Japanese people know which shows air on which days of the week, gather around the TV with their families at night, and then talk about the shows with friends at school the following day. Especially before social media became popular, scenes like this were very common. Even now, with social media at the center of our everyday life, variety shows still continue to be a major platform for learning about trends and famous celebrities.

Japanese variety shows are often led by comedians. There is usually an MC, and 10 or more entertainers sitting around. However, the content of the show is not limited to comedy. Shows often combine many different segments: commenting while watching street-walking or interview footage recorded on another day, singing, exercising, traveling, having conversations, and more.

People dislike variety shows for all kinds of reasons: “They’re vulgar”, “They are too over the top”, … Recently, I have come to think that one major reason I felt uncomfortable with variety shows may have been that they were simply too male-centered.

Famous and influential comedians or celebrities often serve as MCs, but in about 90% of Japanese variety shows, the MC is male. Shows with female MCs are rare. As for other cast members, women now finally make up around 40%, but in the past, men overwhelmingly outnumbered women. Until only a few years ago, there was also a lot of comedy that looked down on women.

Because of that, I think there were few moments of laughter I could genuinely relate to. In a space filled with mostly men, I never knew when someone would suddenly say something that made me feel uncomfortable. Maybe I naturally distanced myself from variety shows because I was always bracing myself for that.

However, recently I’ve found several variety shows that even someone like me can enjoy with peace of mind. And now, surprisingly, I watch them every single week. For advanced Japanese learners, these are shows where you can enjoy the content while also learning Japanese, so this time I’d like to introduce 3 of them to you.

1.  Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru (Girl’s Barking Night)

This is a show where around 10 female celebrities gather and share their worries and experiences on various themes. The “Ueda” in the title refers to Shinya Ueda, a famous male comedian, who serves as the MC. At first, I was thinking, “Even in a show where women talk honestly about their true feelings, the MC is still a male comedian??” and hesitated to watch. But when I actually tried watching it, I realized that Ueda really focuses on drawing out the women’s stories. He rarely talks much about his own opinions or places himself at the center of the conversation. Once I noticed that, I felt reassured and started watching, and before I knew it, I was completely hooked.

The theme changes every episode, but almost every time, there is a story that makes me strongly think, “I know exactly what you mean!” And other times, I feel so encouraged by someone’s way of living, thinking, “It’s so good to live so freely like that.” For example, one time there was a theme about “Early bird women and Night owl women”; I found myself nodding, thinking, “I get that!” when a night owl said, “Sometimes I’m scrolling social media and before I know it, it’s already morning.” On the other hand, hearing someone else say, “Night is when I’m the most active, so I spend the whole night drawing or finishing work” made me think, “Wow, it’s also okay to live with such a free rhythm.”

In the “Complaint festival” episode, many worries unique to women are also discussed. Since the show brings together women active in many different fields – not only comedians, but also actresses, athletes, singers, and more – one of its greatest appeals is being able to hear worries and experiences I would never imagine on my own.

By the way, its sister program – Ueda to Onna ga DEEP ni Hoeru Yoru (Girl’s Barking Deep Night) – discusses more serious social issues and women-specific concerns, such as menopause, sleep disorders, and gender inequality, together with specialists. For a Japanese variety show, the content feels extremely fresh. It is a program that gives viewers not only laughter, but also opportunities to think about society.

2. Talk Queens

As the title “Talk Queens” suggests, this is a talk show featuring around 10 women. What’s more, the MCs are also women. However, the main topic of each episode is usually the private life, views on romance, or unknown side of a male celebrity invited as a guest.

Male guests who appear on Talk Queens often say things like:
“This is the first time I’ve talked so openly about my true feelings.”
“This is the first time I have someone listen to me so kindly and empathize with me like this.”
Male-centered variety shows have their own kind of fun: they can turn almost any event into comedy and sweep it away with great momentum. On the other hand, in this show, where all the regular cast members aside from the guest are women, they listen carefully to the other person until the end and continue asking questions to understand them more deeply. Instead of turning someone’s worries into a joke or making fun of them, they stay close to the person’s feelings, think together, and discuss it. And yet, they still manage to create plenty of laughter that doesn’t hurt anyone. I think it’s such a wonderful atmosphere.
Recently, female celebrities also started appearing as guests!

3. Sekai no Hate Made Itte Q

Unfortunately, this show also has a male MC, but you can see strong, cool female comedians travelling all over the world and taking on various challenges.
There are many physically and mentally demanding projects like photographing animals in the great outdoors of India or Africa, challenging dances around the world, climbing harsh mountains, visiting World Heritage Sites, and more. Even so, watching these female comedians continue to take on challenges powerfully, without ever forgetting humor, moves me every time.

All of the shows I introduced this time can be watched for free on TVer. Since I’m currently not living in Japan, I even use a VPN to watch them every week lol.
