物語の自動販売機：Story vending machine – A drink for the Heart

日本には、街のあちこちにジュースやコーヒーの自動販売機があります。のどが渇いたとき、ボタンを押せばすぐに飲み物が出てくるので、とても便利です。
一方で、最近「物語の自動販売機」というユニークな自動販売機が登場しました。このサービスは、フランスなどですでに利用されていますね。
最近、日本でも実証実験が始まりました。読める作品は、その土地や企画に合わせて選ばれ、「その場所で読むからこそ」の楽しさを味わえるようになっています。
例えば、世田谷区（東京）に置かれた自動販売機では、最寄りの三軒茶屋駅をはじめ、東急世田谷線沿線を舞台にした小説が約30作品用意されているそうです。どの作品も、5分ほどで読める短い物語です。さらに、地域の人から募集した三軒茶屋にまつわる物語もあり、どの作品が出てくるかはランダムになっています。
旅行中などに街の中で偶然出会った短い物語を、無料で気軽に楽しめる。そんな体験が、「読書は楽しい」と感じるきっかけになればいいなと思います。
ジュースの自動販売機が体の渇きをうるおすものだとすれば、物語の自動販売機は心を豊かにしてくれるものかもしれません。

In Japan, you can find vending machines for juice and coffee on every corner of the streets. When feeling thirsty, you only need to press a button, and a drink will come out right away. It’s incredibly convenient.
But recently, a unique kind of vending machine has appeared: a “story vending machine”. This service has already been used in places like France.
Japan has recently started running pilot programs, too. The stories are chosen to suit the location and concept so readers can enjoy something special – stories you can only read in that place.
For example, a story vending machine installed in Setagaya (Tokyo) reportedly offers around 30 short stories set in and around Sangenjaya Station and along the Tokyu Setagaya Line. Each story is short enough to read in about five minutes. There are also stories submitted by residents about Sangenjaya, and you receive one at random.
To be able to enjoy, for free and without fuss, a short story you happen to find in the city while traveling – I hope experiences like that can be the spark that makes people feel, “Reading is fun”.
If drink vending machines quench the body’s thirst, perhaps story vending machines can enrich the heart.
